Finance loves to say “it’s a meritocracy” ...do you believe that? I hear it all the time: “Finance is a meritocracy, if you’re good, you’ll get ahead.” But I’ve seen brilliant women get overlooked while less qualified men get promoted because they have the right connections. I want to believe in a merit-based system, but experience tells me it’s not that simple. Do you think finance is a true meritocracy, or is that just a comforting myth?

I think at the right company with solid decent people it does, I have yet to experience it myself but I have hope that I’ll find it

Meritocracy in terms of knowing all the right people and being able to get them to push for you. I am around a lot of people that do amazing jobs and they have yet to get ahead. We do not have a transparent means of getting ahead here either so you just don’t have a lot of options to even try.

I hear that too, and while I’d love to believe it’s all about merit, it doesn’t always play out that way. Networking and visibility seem to matter just as much, if not more sometimes. It’s frustrating seeing talent overlooked and I doubt if it's ever going to change.
