This happens to me too. Sometimes I need to stretch my hips especially if I've been sitting a lot. I warm up with glute bridges and clam shells and then stretch and that seems to help. Also starting with your heels raised on a plate or something until your calves can stretch more could work. Going to a chiropractor has helped too.
Glute bridges and clam shells are always a good idea - even if your knees aren’t hurting!
A common cause of knee pain with squats is that your hips/glutes aren’t doing enough of the work. Strengthening your glutes may help. I’d trade out using any weights for now and do box squats. It’ll help make sure you’re not coming too far forward with your knees (though you’ll always have some forward movement of your knees) and relying more on your hips. Once that feels good you could start to add weigh back

Not normal. I'm out of shape but my knees don't hurt. Your muscle should hurt. Quads and butt burning. You prob have bad form. Form is more important than anything bc you could not only ruin your joints but also with bad form exercise simply isn't effective. Get a trainer to teach you or try YouTube videos maybe

Then I'm at a loss. Sorry
I also had that a lot...
Make sure to stretch your body before starting and warm it up with some light jogging exercise of 10 min.
Also try and move slow and not too fast! Especially on the way down. Don’t make it cardio when it should be strength. Put all the focus in your glute muscles and not in your legs, move controlled and see how your knees thank you!
Don’t press your legs straight when you come up. Always stay in a slight bended position at the top because that’s increases the pressure on your glute muscles and takes the pressure away from your knees.
Since I do that, I even managed to do squads with weights and (slow, controlled) lunges now without any pain anymore!
I hope that can help you as well :)
Depending on how heavy you have gotten, there may be extra pressure on your joints. My knees used to hurt more after leg exercises, but after I dropped 50 lbs they got better. Also, as your muscle mass increases they will help keep your joints and such in place. Try doing exercises that are low-impact on your joints for now, such as swimming and bicycling. Maybe try squatting without any weights, and then work your way up by adding weights as you feel less pain?
Hmmm this could be it maybe? I gained a bit of weight in 2020 ☹️

If you think you may have bad knees, limit the squat action so you have 1-2 rest days in between squat sessions
Also look up patellofemoral syndrome & see if that sounds familiar. I have it and can’t run bc of it — I cycle a lot and have to be careful about where I mix in squats to my HIIT routine
Strengthening the muscles around your knees should help too! But echoing what everyone else said, try lower impact like squat machines or deadlifts
