You may want to re-think your motivation on this if you are feeling undervalued. Leadership skills aside (because you sound awesome), where is your managers support in this? Are they advocating for you? Is the exe leadership team observing you to see what your potential is? Are you (not your team) meeting your department goals? You have obviously mastered people mgmt. skills, but are you also meeting organizational leadership expectations? As you are promoted up, the amount of hats you need to wear increases.
I understand this all too well. I hesitate to make any assumptions around age or generation, so I will just speak for myself and based off of my own and my peers’ experiences in saying that the hard and widely shared learning and reality is that there exists an incontrovertible distinction between the managers we are, and have actively chosen to be, and the managers we have. Most, if not all, of those from my own cohort know and understand this wholly, literally in our bones. It isn’t fair, and it isn’t right. But then again, not much of the experience has been.
So, and while it may be difficult at times, relish in the successes you have and will continue to create. You already know this, but allow yourself those moments to sit back and think, “Hey, they did that. Look at that achievement, and look at THEIR look at that achievement. They did that- and you know what, I did that too.” And how cool is that.
And it’s these “kids” that are always the ones that seem to make it a point, and then some, to give back all of the acknowledgment and thanks. And it’s when you’re on the receiving end of that, never having been before, let alone known a similar dynamic or experience in reverse, that you know you did something right.
