I went through something like this too! It seems it isn’t as common anymore to have a full tank upon pick up which is awful. I just try to fill up as close as I can to what they gave it to me at. Sometimes it is a bit over but cant do much about that
You are an engineer isn't this basic math that each 10% is 3 gallons so if you pull into the gas station at 20% and need to return at 60% you would add 40% or 12 gallons?

This is fairly common. I always get gas the day I return the car on the way to the airport. You can more easily gauge how much to get to return it to the level it was when you received the car.
If you just return it full, the next person will get it full and you'll spare them this problem.

I rented a RR and had the same issue. Worst of all I actually filled the tank to the top, and they still managed to keep my deposit.
I returned it clean, drove it slow and easy, and returned it full.
