HR should be involved in accommodation requests; otherwise, accommodations can look like favoritism. Also, if your current boss leaves there should be documentation so that the accommodations continue.
HR shouldn’t be acting weird about it though. Since you’re friendly, just ask. “Hey, maybe it’s me but the vibe between us feels off. Is something going on?”
I understand your concern but your manager probably had to tell hr about the accommodation or else they could be accused of favoritism.
In my experience, most large companies prefer for the employee to talk to HR first about accommodations. I’m not saying you’re in trouble (this probably happens a lot!), just sharing my experience.
As someone who has an accommodation, I also feel safer going to hr first so that I know my accommodation is on the record as a federally protected benefit rather than being an informal agreement between myself and my manager (who might have the best intentions, but probably won’t have the same familiarity with employment law as HR). I’m not saying you’re in trouble, just letting you know that in my experience it has worked out well to go through HR.
