Do you know what your insurance covers? Some include mental health resources for a small charge or even for free like, webMD or MDLive. They will give you the option to read some doctors bios and either book in person or online. If you book through your insurance, you typically don’t need a referral. If you find a place that requires a referral, you just need to call your physician/primary care to fax a referral to new practice.
A therapist/psychologist is a good place to start. They take a more holistic approach and work WITH you. Neither therapist or psychologist can prescribe drugs, but they can write notes for behaviors like “max has severe anxiety and needs his emotional support animal to comfort him” or a physiologist could test you for ADD/ADHD then write you a note to get extra time on exams.
Physiatrist typically ask questions, talk to you, make a diagnosis, and possibly choose to prescribe you something (there are limitations to what can be prescribed via phone/video - but this might be more lenient with covid).
This is really helpful, thank you for the details.
Some doctors will make you feel more comfortable than others too. If you find a good one that works for you, stick with it! If you feel like you’re not getting what you hoped for, just ask if they have any recommendations. Also I’d recommend in person or video. I’d question any doctor that would allow a phone appointment for the first visit
Agree with the above! Good place to look for therapists/ psychologist is psychologytoday.com. Take your time, try out different therapists until you come across one that fits. It takes time, but it’s worth it. Good luck!
