For a while I thought the more stress I was feeling, the harder I needed to work. I thought it was normal to be that stressed because everyone else around me was equally as stressed. Eventually I realised that it wasn’t the work itself causing everyone to feel like that, just the pressure put on us by the higher ups. How do you tell the difference between a tough job and a toxic one?

When the only option is to be stressed and pressured. Tough work should be supported. Toxic work is piled on with no stopping point.

That can be very challenging. But I have learned that stress isn't something you necessarily feel every single day, even in high-stress work environments. Toxic jobs keep you stressed day in and day out with no relief.

I recently started seeing a naturopath and it turns out my cortisol levels were out of control. I had no idea. While stress hormones affect men and women differently, no one can keep revving the engines all the time and expect to get a great long-term health outcome. If you can’t leave your toxic environment, I suggest you seek support from a naturopath or similar to help you manage. I’ve always protected exercise in my life, but cleaner eating has also helped me to be more positive about work and life.

Yes! This was huge for me. Getting my cortisol under control made a world of difference.

I’ve suffered from workaholism for a long time. Thanks to a lot of great self help books and therapy, I’m no longer putting work on a pedestal and I’m spending a lot more time on self care and my marriage. But, unfortunately, I am now getting withdrawals, because my body is used to the daily adrenaline of throwing myself into work. It’s this terrible feeling of like anguish/unease in my gut, but I don’t have anything I’m worried about- it’s like my body wants to find something to worry about.
