I have been fully remote since 2019 (with different comapny's) - I cannot speak to your company, of course, but from my experience, the vast majority of company's base salary off of the candidates market for remote roles. I have been explicitly told by HR (on mor ethan one occassion), that while my target range was within the range for that role as a whole, it was not for my specific location. Even though my target range was absolutely within the general US-market range for my experience/education.
Thanks for your input. I can see it would only benefit to have it according to whoever’s cost of living was higher.
I would imagine companies may try and pay you less based on where you live. But I’ve never heard of a company paying more. For example if the company is in a low/ medium cost of living area and they have a remote role I can’t imagine them paying someone a salary based on New York COL. Especially with how competitive remote roles are.
Thanks for your response. I guess it makes sense. But I wish they’d pay based on how much they paid in the highest area. Heh
I took my nyc salary to the coast of Florida fwiw
Boss! That’s nice
Location of the candidate/ee
Thanks. I wish it was wherever was the most pay.
A lot of companies pay people based on where the employee lives. So you should try to negotiate based on the HQ location, but it's an open question if they'll go along with that. It seems unfair to pay people less if they're doing the same work, but that's just how the marketplace works.
I agree with you - why get paid less when you’re doing the same or even more than your colleagues!
I want the salary to be based on whatever gets me the most money. I would say it makes more sense as a whole to pay for the area the employee lives in. Imagine HQ in a low-cost area, and then you live in a higher-cost area.
I wonder if any companies do that
Remote location!
Thanks
As someone who lives in Croatia and is an English speaking Australian and has worked for minimal wage here and also in Malta, I would say the latter.
