Started career in NYC, then went home: Vancouver, Toronto, and now Montreal (yes, I'm a Canadian). NYC hours were insane, but you learn so much and meet a bazillion cool people. 1 year in NYC equals 2-3 anywhere else. Since, well, Vancouver is sleepy, but the hours are chill. Toronto punches well above is weight, especially recently, but the hours are NYC. Montreal is relaxed, the design culture is world class.
It depends on the agency. I've worked in NYC, LA, Boulder, and Chicago. I worked the longest hours of my career by far in LA (including every weekend for a year). But the pay in NYC is definitely higher. It has to be, or nobody in the industry could afford to live there.
@brand strategist - that's why I said it depends on the agency. With Silicon Valley and all the west coast startups, you can end up working some brutal hours in LA, SF, or Seattle.
Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, and New York. You have the best chance of building a strong portfolio of work and experiences at a reputable NYC agency. However, opportunities exist across most all cities at the higher profile agencies. The key is getting exposure to tough strategic challenges and smart clients wherever you go. Depending upon your tenure and discipline you can make good money, but obviously cost of living factors into salaries on the coasts.
Worked in advertising in four major markets, including NYC. Hours are pretty comparable in each city, not better or worse in NYC. Pay is slightly higher, but not high enough to balance out cost of living. It sure is a fun place to live though!
@a. creative director - really ?!!! I thought NY was all about long hours and west coast about work life balance
Thanks this is good info
Such helpful info - much appreciated.
