For those who have taken maternity leave, did you take it all at once? Or spread it out? What would you say are the benefits for either way? Does spreading it out help avoid any disgruntled feelings from coworkers who are backing you up while you’re out?

Here is my advice. Don’t worry about disgruntled co-workers. Take the time you need and want with your family. The company will be fine, your co-workers will be fine.

Okay honestly, I really needed to hear this. Conceptually I know you’re right, but emotionally I just don’t want anyone to get upset with me

A have taken mat leave twice, 16 weeks, then 22. I split the first one up at 10 weeks leave, work 4, out 6, only because I wanted to be on leave over Christmas. Took the 22 weeks all at once. I didn’t think about my coworkers. The 4 weeks that I worked the first time were fully remote with child care being split between my husband, a sitter and myself since I was nursing.

I would recommend to just worry about your growing family, congratulations!

I didn't even know spreading it out was an option. You mean like working part-time, or taking some time before and after you give birth? I've never had a child yet, but we are in the process of preparing to have our first kid, so these were things I hadn't even thought of yet!

I’m not sure if it varies company to company, but at mine you can take it in chunks as long as your manager approves it. So for example you could take 4 weeks after giving birth and then save the last 2 weeks for later in the year for like a vacation or whatever you need when your baby is older.

I took all of mine at once. I honestly wish I had split it up but at the time people weren't really doing that so I didn't know it was an option. I would split it up if I had to do it all over again.

I had no idea you even could take it spread out!!

I think it depends on the company, but yes it’s definitely a thing!

I would think that after you have the baby unless you have some very involved assistance at home, you will want to spend the whole time with the baby and healing. It takes a lot to get back to feeling like a normal person again.

It never occurred to me that I could spread out my maternity leave. I just assumed everyone took their maternity leave all at once. Then you had to go back to work.
