I have some good ex colleagues who moved over there and also looked up on LinkedIn and see lots of seemingly smart and accomplished people in their D&A team in the UK.
I'll ask my ex colleagues too, but wanted to see if people here have any opinion or information on this too.
TIA

For me it was largely my co-clerks. My judge was nice but fairly formal and very busy, so the general rule was only bother him when need be. But being able to walk into the offices on either side of you and bounce ideas off of very smart people with the time and inclination to talk was quite enjoyable. Now, a few years out, I'm closer to some than others, but I intend to keep in contact with all of them for the rest of my career.
I got lucky. It definitely isn't universal. People talk more about bad judges but I've heard plenty of stories from folks who had awful co-clerks. Mostly dickish ones but also a few who slacked off or weren't doing the work, and their co-clerks had to pick up their slack.
My judge is really kind and genuinely cares about our wellbeing. My co-clerk is probably the best person I know. I think I’m just very fortunate and so grateful for how things worked out.
Had two great judges, tons of responsibility, and great coclerks. This has been an amazing experience for me. I also just wanted to clerk mostly for the experience itself rather than the gold star. I really liked law school
You could also apply to appellate clerkships. I did both MJ and appellate clerkships and am happy to chat about those experiences via DM.
some people loved writing their opinions and interacting with their coworkers, including the judge. My clerkship was not on that level because our judge actually never ate lunch with us for example, but i am glad I did it.
Sorry to hear you were disappointed ):. What was disappointing about it?
I think most of it has to do with the career clerk they make me feel like I’m working for them and not with them and they’re also just difficult to work with and our personalities clash. It’s such an isolating job so that doesn’t make the fact that the work is actually boring, any better. I am clerking for a magistrate judge in a district where they handle mostly habeas petitions, so barely any exposure to civil litigation. I feel like I’m not walking away with any experience I can use in practice, except that my writing/editing skills is better.
I had two great judges. They both prioritized mentorship and treated the clerks like professionals and not as glorified assitants. I also have close friendships with my coclerks. It really depends on the people.
