To those who applied for and obtained an appellate clerkship *after* clerking at a district court: How many applications did you submit to get your appellate clerkship? Did you have your district court judge advocate on your behalf, and if so, how much of a difference do you feel it made?

Slightly different situation here. Obtained a circuit clerkship after obtaining a district clerkship, but before the district clerkship began. I think I applied to about ten circuit judges. District definitely helped by unlocking CJs with a district prerequisite. That req greatly narrows the pool of applicants to those judges—trouble there is that the pool may also be better qualified on the whole because everyone was good enough to get a district. But anyway, given the timing, I didn’t even tell my district judge I was applying. He basically didn’t know me yet at that point, and I just didn’t want to bother him as a not-yet clerk.

Notably, I also think some circuit judges take solace in hiring decisions that have already been made by DJs. A bit of a “sanity check” for them, it seems.

I submitted maybe 10. My district judge did make a couple phone calls to judges they know. I think it made a minor difference. I got interviews even with judges they didn’t call.

I recall applying broadly, and being flexible about location. A letter reference from your district court judge will help. Even better would be a reference from a former clerk of the appellate judge.

like

I applied to about 30 circuit judges, all of them within the same circuit as the two district judges I clerked for. One judge wrote one of my letters of recommendation, and the other judge made a phone call once I got an interview. I think both helped.

I applied to about 20-30, but that may have been on the fewer side compared to most. I was really targeted in terms of circuits, including the circuit I clerked in at the d.Ct level. My judge served as a reference and sent out emails to judges she personally knew. I ended up getting an interview and accepting an offer with a judge she didn’t email, but my second judge did call her to talk about my candidacy.

Now'what and all would be the consequences she might face. Is there any chance of these things are being escalated? Please advise!

I have not been on a project for over 3 months. Since I joined, I have been put in training. The training got extended by a month and now it's close to 4 months since I joined and without a project.

What should I do? People say that I'm lucky to get paid without doing any work, but it is stressing me out. I need the experience. The uncertainty is freaking me out, with rumours of layoffs and the certification program and all.

How do I get into a project? How long do I have to wait more?

Well I recently told a guy I have been seeing I have HSV-2. We have not yet been physical but it’s been heading that direction. Man I hate this part - waiting to see what his response will be after he researches and talks to his doctor. I’m on daily meds which help reduce transmission risk. You’d think that since HSV-2 affects 20% of Americans and likely a higher % of gay men, there would be less taboo but it’s hardly ever talked about. Anyone else in my shoes? Or had it disclosed to them?

Need advice on a specific question!
Interviewed with Chicago court 2 weeks ago; they decide mid-August. Interviewed with DC judge last week; hear from him by this Friday. Chicago said if I need an answer before August, they'd try to make a decision about me sooner.
Should I ask Chicago for an answer? Or should I wait until there's an offer from DC judge? Maybe seems better to withdraw before an offer is made rather than ask for time to think about it/turn down DC? What's proper etiquette?

I’ve been at my clerkship for 5 years (4 with a different judge) and one with my current judge, and I heard horrible things about him before starting, but I assumed they were exaggerated. Turns out they’re all true, and I’ve had to start therapy to deal with him and the incredibly toxic environment. I’m trying to get out ASAP b/c he also has a history of firing clerks without cause or notice, but I think I’ll only be able to give two weeks notice if i get the job I’m interviewing for. Thoughts?

I went to a T14 law school, got great grades and glowing recommendations, and wrote (what I thought was) a great writing sample. But I got rejected from all 70 federal clerkships I applied to. The only thing I can think of is: I took a non traditional route after law school and did a 2 year public interest fellowship in a niche field of administrative law.
