Capturing close to 100% is not particularly difficult. The trick is to write your description in a way that shows value added to the file. Otherwise the insurers will push back and cause you to waste time disputing your time entries.
Yes and the more senior you are the less you get cut.
I read a post somewhere about how billing higher hours is a skill you learn over time. Initially, you’re learning the area of law and so you spend a lot of time figuring out what to do and asking questions and double-checking your work to make sure you did it right. Once you know the law better and are more familiar with how ID cases work, you can move faster and bill more. I’m new to ID and it’s definitely a been learning curve.
I track my time and keep a log reflecting how much I worked before cuts are made. That way I can show that I am putting the requisite time in, even if the final numbers are lower .You can’t predict what will get cut or what guideline might suddenly get changed. I totally understand though, it’s definitely frustrating when the final say on if your hours count or not is out of your hands.
I’m 6 years in and bill 100% of my time unless it is a marketing event or team lunch. Most ID firms only look at what you bill, not what is cut, assuming your realization is high. My realization has always been 99% and you can submit arguments to appeal cut time. It definitely takes time and it’s nice to have a good mentor. You can ask for someone else’s time report and try to mimic how they write their entries. I feel like the biggest challenge is that no one tells you if you’re doing something wrong for a long time. I was lucky to have my first mentor review my time each week until I got it down.

Alot of time is lost because people don't know that they are doing things subconsciously that can be billed for. For example, you review a complaint and you bill for that review. However, did you also consider analyzing whether you have potential MTD arguments like SOL, failure to state a cause of action? Did you bill for that time analyzing. Just small things like that add up. Also look at the bill rejections to see what other people bill for so you have a better idea of what tasks you should be doing.
