I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

History of BCG layoffs anyone?

First: make sure you’re abiding by the primary directive. Bill. For. Everything. Second, approach whoever is in charge of your review (especially if a partner) and tell him/her you’re slow. Preempt that low hours report.
If the firm is getting terminally slow then your job might be in danger. Spend your extra time looking for jobs.
Look at the case file, see what’s due soon, and volunteer to start working on it; don’t just rely on partners to give you assignments (obvi wait for an OK before getting started)
I’d look at other opportunities in your spare time as well. I had this issue with my first firm. Everyone claimed they loved me, but I continually struggled to hit hours and would constantly be sending emails for more work. When having little work is an issue, it either means the firm is slow, or it is poorly organized.
What kind of cases?
Have you updated the client and insurance re case status? Drafted an assessment to the carrier/client? Drafted your mediation brief? Done research on opposing counsel/judge/mediator? Subpoenaed relevant third parties? Interviewed witnesses and collected declarations? Reviewed/organized/evaluated the relevant documents? Prepared deposition outlines? Prepared your client to be deposed? Researched all applicable legal issues? Does your insurance carrier ask for an estimated budget—has that been updated recently? Are all of opposing counsel’s discovery responses sufficient? Do you need to meet and confer on anything? Is there any other discovery you could serve or prepare? Have you discussed the mediation process/strategy with your client? What’s the strategy if mediation fails? Have you analyzed if any motions would be appropriate?… there is almost always something you could be doing to work up a case…
I’m a little bit jaded in this regard. I suffered through exactly this same situation, as did several of my peers. My firm laid off and/or reassigned a bunch of us. I agree with the recommendation to spend your free time looking. I wish that I had better news.
Brings the concern to the partner. If anything, youre working for a place that doesnt expect u to actually hit your hours so when bonus time comes he cna tell u to simmer down.
