Market is flooded with new freelancers due to all the layoffs… and the layoffs have been stacking on since 22. Lots of competition = agencies taking advantage of folks.
At the same time clients are pulling back budgets so agencies are just overloading their staff and hiring lower seniority freelancers only as a last resort after burnout
Add in the AI idiocracy thinking that one person can replace 5 when it can hardly replace 1 junior creative
My advice is take what you can get for now to weather the storm and quit when something better comes along
Corpos have ruined job loyalty so as long as you don’t leave your team hanging, you’re good to gtfo whenever in my book
Getting half my day rate. But you know what? Happy to have it. Went freelance in September when I was laid off and work has been steady. It’s been outside of traditional agencies and a much needed break from the holding co bullsh!t
Bummer. I think robbing people when they’re remote is kinda wild. It’s the same work. And it was perfectly fine when every agency’s real estate was null and void during the pandemic. They seem to have forgotten how they floated on our good will, energy and internet bills, and other work related expenses.
The pendulum will swing back when the ai bubble bursts. Convenient for agencies to reduce headcount under the ai narrative. But when it’s revealed they’re not actually using ai properly or to the level they’ve advertised it to clients, the agencies will be the ones crying for help.
Yes it feels that way. Honestly I’m terrified to answer when they ask what my day rate is. I wish they’d just say here’s what we have yes or no
You are lucky to have gigs. I have 0
yeah I think I’m going back to job hunting.
That's what you get when everyone's remote. Total correlation. Enjoy!
^ this. Remote’s pretty much gone the wayside back to pre-pandemic levels. It’s a market flooded with people laid off, not anything to do with remote gigs.
Seems good at the moment. Fortunate to have won some awards last year. But who knows how long it’ll last?
I charged my full rate for a pretty big agency now being acquired by Omnicom, thanks to an ECD who recommended me that I used to work under full-time. That was about a month ago.
I’ve stayed busy. But this industry is cooked. I don’t really see a world where we go back to the number of roles we had prior to 2020. And there’s so much more work that’s churn in burn because of social and programmatic. Aside from pay, it doesn’t feel as much of a fulfilling path as it was before.
