From an employee point of view, how should you approach asking for a pay rise without damaging relationships or seeming entitled?

Your delivery of it is all that matters. If you come in demanding, that makes you seem entitled, without building up any reason for the raise. I see people do that when they have other offers in hand, and it backfires basically every time. Pretend you are the other person. What would you need to hear to decide to give out a raise?

That’s some good advice, thank you for sharing😁

I'd say this probably depends on what the organizational structure is and the last time you received a raise. If you feel you're overdue for a raise, then I'd make sure to talk to your direct supervisor first, but make sure to bring all your contributions to the table. You want to sell yourself and your accomplishments well, and present your case for why you deserve that pay. I would also do some market research on what pay ranges in your area are for the job responsibilities you hold. If you're doing more than your typical job description, that's a great point to add, and the research can help make your request seem more reasonable. I hope this helps, and best of luck to you!

Yeah I agree, yes always best to do some research before so you know a rough figure of what to expect / what you deserve. Thank you 😁

If your company has an evaluation process you can discuss it around mid-year follow up to set a target for goals achieved by end of year. If perhaps that isn't the case and you have been taking on additional duties, you may consider emailing your manager to set up a time to discuss the possibility. Managing a team responsibly includes being aware of what each team member contributes to the overall function of the department and aligning salary accordingly. The review process also assists them in that capacity. Unless they are not utilizing that process, it shouldn't be unreasonable to schedule a time to discuss an opportunity for advancement.

Listen, I learned a long time ago that nobody is going to advocate for you, but you. It doesn't make you entitled to ask for what you deserve. Keep it based on what you have accomplished over the last year and what you have done for the company.

I think framing it around impact and contribution helps. I try to keep it factual, calm, and tied to outcomes rather than need or comparison.

Yes we do have a set up like that, that’s a good point, thank you 😁

I really need advice. I’ve been in my current role for a couple years and I’m just so defeated. I am good at my job. I work so hard and I’m so undervalued and unappreciated. My work is scrutinized to a degree that no one else experiences (I could give concrete examples of other people delivering design work that haven’t met BASIC design principles and it’s gotten approved) compared to me where I frequently get feedback that somehow makes my work worse but I just comply because it’s not (1/2)

Hiya!

I'm looking at applying to MBB (Preferably BCG) for a summer internship this summer. I'm a first-gen Oxbridge student, and while I have little experience in consulting along the lines of MBB, I did work in the city last summer as an sustainability consultant.

I'm curious how important it is to have a referral etc and what you'd recommend for applications opening in jan. Any advice is super appreciated I don't have any connections to the industry but it's something im interested in.

Please help! I’m a CRC who manages Investigator- led clinical research projects and I want to transition to a PM role in industry (I would slightly prefer not a PM role in clinical trials since I don’t have clinical trial experience.) I’ve applied to PM roles at many biotech companies (e.g. Charles River, ICON, Paraxel) but only got 1 interview which didn’t work out. Which companies should I look to for an entry level PM role? Any good startups to consider? Anyone have any insight or advice?

I’m trying to get a rotation in FDD but my partner is worried about temporarily losing resources in our advisory practice. So, what are some things I could learn in FDD that I could bring back to the advisory practice that might convince the partner to let me go on rotation?
