Got laid off one week after filing an official complaint against manager, the issues with her were ongoing for months and even HR acknowledged that she was not innocent. Trying to reconcile , anyone here in employee relations or HR that can help provide some understanding of this type of retaliation? Why is the company so laissez faire about this?

HR is unfortunately there to protect the business, not you - they only marginally pivot to stay within the lines of the law but still find ways to eliminate the ‘problem’

To them, that problem is too often considered you - for raising it, despite it being exactly the right thing to do; notoriously, perceived authority figures are also usually believed 🤬

This is a really horrible situation, so sorry this has happened to you… not sure how long you have been working but I have seen this play out many times - their way of brushing you, your complaint and the reputational risk it poses to the business under the carpet… disgusting

Which country are you in? And how long have you been in your role? It may change how the company treats you due to law differences

I was in the role for just over 2 years, i am a SME and help build the whole reporting structure and the team, also i am US. My previous manager was really supportive and valued me, this woman was none that.

I would no longer communicate with their HR. Call an employment lawyer to see if you have a case. Be sure to file for unemployment.

You will be so emotionally drained and probably won't win. Got to think if it's worth it. I have found it isn't worth extra time and stress. Walk away.

I got burned once in a situation where I was written up for a mistake that I didn’t make. I pled my case to HR with documented evidence, but this write-up was never dismissed. If I have any issues that warrant a complaint I just live with it and work on exiting the company. HR will not help the employee, only the employer. They’re OK to answer benefits questions, but other than that I NEVER go to HR for anything.

The situation was getting super toxic and i wanted some meditation because this woman refused to hear me and started creating stressful situation for my team as well.

My dad used to tell me they aren’t principles unless you stick to them when it has a personal cost.

You got retaliated against potentially and you have options with the state and Feds as well as the courts and you should explore them but none are fast and. Even if offered your job back would you want it?

If complaining was the right thing than be content you did the tight thing and that you’ll have some pain for doing so but be better in the long run (and when you become a manager you’ll be better because of it too).

Right thing based on my view and against harassment. however the message to others from this is never complain else you'll lose your job. so basically my sacrifice in vain and all the while i will continue suffering for it. I already treated my team better than i was being treated but somehow that's neither here or there. I stuck to my principles but hard to do in future so given the cost. Apparently unless it's a protected trait there's no case for discrimination either.

Isn’t that retaliation? You can sue them. What company is this?

Apparently not, unless it's for a legally protected trait like firing for age, sex, race e.t.c. the definition of retaliation is pretty narrow as far as the law goes.

They will play the "at-will" card. How are your performance reviews? Have you received any bonuses since your last review? Have you been placed on a PIP? I'm in FinTech. I've gone through similar. Your answers will help me provide you more info.

Thanks EA1, yes they claimed it was reorg. Also checking with lawyers- they said unless it was a legally protected trait there's nothing illegal about it. I haven't seen the position up yet but i am guessing they will hold off for a couple of months before posting the role and will likely call it something else to cya in case

I also do this as feeelance on the side, so where do I draw the line between who I refer to the company I work for or who I personally do freelance for? I don’t want to short out the company I work for but also love freelance and am more than capable of the work.

Feeling really nervous, help! I’ve been using topical hydroquinone 4% since before I found out I was pregnant. Now reading the label I realise that it’s not advised and a category C by the FDA - I’m 6 weeks pregnant and have obviously stopped now but really scared I might have caused serious harm to my baby.

Have any of you used this while pregnant and it turned out fine? Any other insights that can give me some peace of mind? 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
