Had a call with a recruiter from a local financial services firm yesterday. Basically, they need a new senior accountant on short notice due to the old one's personal matters. Interview's on Monday and I like them.

But there's no clear path to promotion, aside from the controller retiring. The recruiter was considerate enough to disclose it. What would be the realistic long-term plan here?

See how it goes at the interview and try to ascertain whether you'll be learning a lot and growing in the job. If there's no clear path for advancement in their company that's not ideal. Yet it might be fine if you think what you get from the job will be transferable. If it's a stepping stone to a better position elsewhere in a few years time it might be a good move.

Yeah, I'm thinking of asking about how the position will interact with the company's M&A activities, as the recruiter really harped on that. Plus, I'd be able to show that as exp to other finance recruiters. Basically, it's going to be a mix of GL accounting, AR, "maybe AP", payroll, and financial modeling.

My dad's in another industry, but his advice was to do 2-3 years and then start looking around.

Which resume line would provide better signaling of talent to employers?

MBB? Or a mid cap VC ($500 AUM, not a name brand like Sequoia). Post MBA level at both, no promotions assumed. Not necessarily focused on future VC path over the long term, but interested in experimenting.
