In the US, spend some time at a Greyhound station, and you will quickly discover reasons to seek other transportation methods.
Ridership usually increases for Greyhound during times of inflation and increased airfare prices.
Buses sound budget-friendly, but you’re paying in time, comfort, and sanity. Yeah, they’re cheaper, but after one too many overnight rides with bad seats and weird passengers, I’m over it. If I can’t fly, I’ll take a train—it’s way more comfortable and still scenic. Some savings just aren’t worth it.
Just like everything in life, it depends on
I used to travel by bus from Kyiv to London and back, from NYC to Miami, and from LA to SF. It is definitely budget-friendly and scenic, but you sacrifice the time and comfort.
Omg your back must’ve been a wreckkkkk
I took a train from Spain to Amsterdam stopping in France then a bus from Amsterdam back to France stopping in Belgium. Bus was way cheaper and as a 20 something I had a lot of time but not a lot of money. I liked the bus because it was more convenient and it stopped in weird places in Belgium that I wouldn’t have necessarily gone to. I liked the train because it was comfortable and I could walk around, and stopped in a main station where it was easy to navigate around. They’re different experiences so it depends on what you like
had friends take multi-day greyhounds or amtraks.
they were in community college (so ~20 yo) and wanted to optimize for savings over comfort.
I’ve taken day-long buses but balked at overnight. They’re fine, just have to watch for times when the AC is broken and the air gets stuffy giving you a headache. I now travel with a CO2 sensor for general health purposes.
I would do it again if caught in an expensive flight period but haven’t needed to as I sometimes take $29 Frontier flights.
overall the situation is shitty and I totally get why lot of folks move overseas these days and might do it myself. Europe/Asia is more than 2x the population density so US infra won’t even have the conditions to catch up anytime in most folks’ lifetimes.
In Western countries, both busses and trains I tried were crap, exhausting, filthy - only do if you have a shower ready before the client meeting.
Vietnam: totally different story - would take the bus ANY day.
I don’t hate my life enough to do that.
Taking a train in Europe is totally fine. Public transportation in the USA and Latin America SUCKS.
Back in the day when I was young and broke, I used to take the Megabus from LA to SF and from LA to Vegas. You could get seats as low as $1 if you planned ahead. But it was slow, the wifi basically never worked, and the rider demographic was not desirable.
All of which is to say: if that's all your budget allows for, then it's a solid way to get from A to Z. But if you have a bigger budget, there's no reason to ever do this. Cons outweigh the pros.
There has not actually been an uptick in airline accidents from past years, the news is just reporting on it more.
