There are no relevant certifications in management consulting save, arguably, a top MBA
It’s an apprenticeship model
Don’t get taken by a company looking to make a buck for a certificate that can actually discredit you
As someone who came from a non-business background, I found the Black Belt program extremely helpful. I prepped for 6 months with the materials, ex-MBB coach, and case partners, and can confidently say that it improved my thinking, which ultimately made me a top candidate and led to an offer. The cost is definitely a key consideration, but I don't think I would have been as successful (and would've been way more stressed) without MC. Lots of online content can make self-study overwhelming.
I did it like 8-9 years ago. Purchased it the summer as I was heading into B-school with the goal of getting into MBB. I just left Bain after 6 years. Also got an offer from BCG. Impossible to say if I would’ve gotten an offer without it but I do think it was helpful and recommend the service.
Yes, there are many resources at B-school, but tbh you don’t really get coaching from former MBBs who have conducted interviews. As I recall, all the coaches I worked with at MC were SM/EM/PL+. There’s very few people at that level in B-school. The b-school MBBs who have conducted interviews at most only did it a couple of times and usually for undergrad hires. The Management Consulted coaches had been at MBB for years. You just won’t get this level of coaching through the school.
I’d recommend watching the videos and doing 10-15 reps with fellow students/school resources to get a good feel for casing before doing the reps with the MC coaches. If you’re not at school (or are at one without good resources) then I just don’t see where you’re going to get quality and well-structured feedback without this type of service. Everything I mention is especially true. I saved a few of the practice cases with MC coaches for right before my interviews and even did 1 before second rounds.
Obviously you can get in without professional coaching, but you need to evaluate the quality of whatever resources you have available to you. If it’s not coming from people who have regularly conducted MBB interviews then you’re missing out. I found it super helpful.
I don’t recall them having a certificate when I was there. I don’t think that’s valuable.
For me it was since I ended up getting the offer. It sounds like you won’t have access to any type of structured training? If so, I think it could definitely be worth it for you.
That said, how far along in the process are you? Are you getting interviews? That’s step 1. There’s no point in paying for it if you’re not getting interviews or if you’re not a good candidate.
I agree with the response above. I did it 6 years ago, and didn’t have any case interview experience before. I found it really helpful to boost my confidence with interviews.
I got offers in the sector I was hoping to work in from two firms. It cost less back then, but I’m glad I did it.
Yeah it’s mainly the price and no guarantee thst makes me skeptical.
“The black bet” - this sounds interesting, what is this bet about m?? 👀
