You’ve earned this, even if you don’t want it. Take it (as long as there are no adverse financial results). You can always climb back down that ladder, even internally. I know of partners who decided to transition to counsels.
I knew that my firm intended to promote me to partner before the end of the year, but was recently told the time line had moved up and the promotion would go into effect by July 1. Do I accept the promotion knowing I intend to leave at the first opportunity? Decline for unspecified personal reasons? Lie and say I’m not ready but ask that we revisit the topic in 6-12 months?
Is this equity partner and is there a buy in? If not, accept it and then keep looking for the better opportunity. Do you have a respectable portable book?
