I’ve heard through the grapevine play therapy isn’t worth it but OT is, but your pediatrician should be able to direct.
FWIW, our pediatrician just referred us for some OT for our almost 4 yr old daughter who shows some anxious/avoidant tendencies.
Play therapy is the correct therapy for a 3 year old. Just watch a child play with a doll house and the little ppl; boy or girl not only does it stretch their imagination, very important for those soft social skills, but they will act out things on their mind. It can be quite informative. That’s only one way play is used as a therapeutic tool (ie doll house) .
There really is no other effective way to work with a 3 yo. Play therapy holds their interest and provides a wealth of info. It takes time though so be patient.
I worked with preschool kids in private practice for a couple years. And, I worked elementary for the majority of my years in education -school social worker-mental health specialist. You’d be surprised how many elementary kids have the capacity for insight. The problem is it’s short lived.
Good luck! I think you’ll be happy with the results. In the school the swkr and OT work closely together for those who get OT.
Seems there is confusion about Play vs. OT. Play therapy is for feelings and behavior while OT is for daily life skills. My 9yo is in play therapy to find ways to cope with big emotions due to adhd. It is helping, but it's a long road, not a quick fix. Find a good therapist and be actively involved with the strategies at home.
Good for you for getting after it so quickly. My son used to be part of a playgroup that was formed around one kid and her play therapy. Basically she needed a couple of kids to meet weekly with the kid she was working with so she can create play based situations for them to work through. It was fantastic for all the kids and specifically the kid working through his issues (wasn’t anxiety was something different) has made tons of progress. Key advice….take anything you can get paid for by marriage but also consider pursuing additional things that may be self pay too. What’s covered often isn’t as much as you might want them to have. Good luck!
