Yeah they helped me a little with some of the more overt symptoms of work stress (e.g., anxiety, panic attacks, just general ability to function), though they didn’t treat burnout per se.
Yes, still on them 20 years later. But I wouldn’t have survived that period without them. I’ve posted what happened before so I won’t revisit it, but my burnout ended in a breakdown so I accepted anti depressants as an alternative to hospitalisation. It did help but I’d let burnout go beyond what was safe by then.
Therapy and SSRI was really helpful for me when I was very burnt out (I've done Lexapro, Wellbutrin, and Zoloft at different times). The SSRIs helped me be at a better place to go to therapy and practice what I used in therapy, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend just the meds at least for myself. If you are dealing with more acute issues, like panic attacks, propranolol helped me a lot. It's just a low dose heart rate lowering med, and allowed me to approach difficult conversations and other moments better.
Therapy + SSRI helped me recover.
I’ve done a combination of the meds and counseling. As well as just forcing myself to get outside and walk or enjoy nature doing something that I enjoy that will get the good endorphins flowing. It doesn’t work for everybody unfortunately but it’s a start good for you for looking into taking care of yourself like this! Kudos to you!
Mine helps me focus. I take Wellbutrin which is antidepressant and can be used for ADHD
Lots of medications available and it can be a ‘try and see’ but if you’ve tried 3 or more and you find it’s not helping or you have horrible side effects, ask for a genetic test. As your body metabolizes them differently. For example, I have a folate absorption issue so some medications I don’t get the full benefit. Others I’ve tried which my genetic disposition is positive, the side effects have been crippling but it doesn’t show in the genetic test as to why I have these issues. Read the side effects carefully as some of these medications can make you feel worse ex. Brain fog, increased anxiety, suicidal ideation, etc so it may make you feel more confused and are doing the opposite of what you’re trying to accomplish, which is elevating the burnout/anxiety/panic attacks/etc.
You may find you need to take a FMLA or some sort of leave to reset. Make sure your supervisor isn’t contributing to your mental state, emotional abuse. If you do take leave find an employment lawyer for your return so OSHA retaliation is documented correctly.
