Coach
I am a highly anxious person and I realize my behavior is outside of the norm.
When my oldest was going to go to daytime summer camp when he was 6, I got him a watch by Gabb Wireless. He'd been to school and also daycare, but he'd never been driven anywhere by anyone other than me or dad and he was going to be in a transit van for about 90 minutes a day. We live in LA area and there are enough things to worry about, so this gave me some peace.
The watch allows up to 100 approved contacts. It has preprogrammed text messages (you can create like up to 25 responses), and the wearer can also send voice texts. It has GPS as well. You can set "safe zones" and you'll get a notification when your kid enters or exits the zone.
At the time, comparable products were offered by Verizon and TMobile. The Verizon one the parent had to be in the Verizon app to communicate with the kid, which I didn't like. I like that it's a free standing device that has no connection to services that are geared toward an older audience.
My kid wears his watch almost daily. The battery does require charging daily, which is annoying. But a small hassle in the grand scheme. I ALWAYS recommend this watch. My kid is in 4th grade now and still wears it to school, and I toss it in his backpack for sports (it is very inconvenient to wear while playing basketball and baseball). I'll upgrade him to a phone with this same company (they do not put social media or allow communication apps) when he's in junior high.
This is extremely helpful, thank you!!
I got my 8 year old a T mobile watch. Its pretty basic - 10 ish contacts saved and she can male and receive calls only.
I’ve seen really bad reviews for the T-mobile one, basically that the way to manage the watch changed and now it’s awful, something along those lines
Yes started at about 8. I needed them to be able to contact me while at practice since most parents don’t stay. Like if it rained and got cancelled. Or practice was going to end early. Or if I’m running late for the bus stop and can message them that I’m running late and to go home with XX
A friend has a Gabb watch for their 8 year old and is happy with it
