A lot of organizations have a policy that they have to post jobs to the public as well as internally. So a lot of times an internal candidate is very likely to get the job, but they still go through the motions of talking to other people. It's unfair to the candidates, as it gets their hopes up and wastes their time. Companies should seriously reconsider those policies, they seem like they promote fairness but they honestly don't.
Yeah I have. It was a real gut punch because it happened earlier in my career, before I knew this was something of a standard practice. I didn't even seek the job out either, a recruiter from a big name company reached out to me and everything. I figured they must've been really high on me to do that, so when the first few interviews went great, I assumed I had it in the bag. Came as quite the shock when they told me they were impressed by my experience but were going with an internal candidate instead 😂. Looking back on it, I can't believe I was ever that naive.
It’s frustrating, but common. Some postings are compliance box-checking. I now focus on roles where I can connect directly with a recruiter or hiring manager before applying.
