Have you ever been in a role where your responsibilities kept growing, but your paycheck didn’t? How did you handle it?

Definitely. For me, this is why I do as much as I can for one company while growing as much as I can in the role, then strategically jump ship to another company offering hiring pay.

I agree. It’s best to strategize.

Pretty sure this is the norm these days, even though it's a horrible way to treat your employees. You could try scheduling a one-on-one and point out that, though you are happy to do the extra responsibilities, you would like your pay to reflect it based on the going market rate for that role in your area (and provide the numbers).

Yes I think it’s considered normal unfortunately.

I was required to RTO . Reality , to be a body and train a new hire team, without being paid for doing so.

Wow! This sounds incredibly frustrating.

I always make sure to schedule one on ones with management when I feel that way

Unfortunately, my management isn’t very helpful in conversations like these.

This is largely every role. My approach was to try and make it a “learning experience”. I learned some new skills that sincerely have saved me in my new role. I think there also should be a genuine professional conversation between yourself and leadership and start pointing out that some responsibilities come across as needing support from elsewhere. It’s not unfair to say that while you’re being a “team player” by shouldering more work, these task should be spread out. Especially if they’re outside of your role and more into someone else’s. It’s just everywhere that if you do a great job then companies push more onto your plate. Hold your ground in a nice way. Doesn’t work then you have more than enough reason to ask for more money.

like

If you get any sass then just let them know how important it is to you to have time and bandwidth to complete your core tasks first. Especially bc that is how you’re held accountable in reviews and overall performance. You prefer to be able to focus on those first. Being mindful of your wording bc you still want to show you want to help but the help also should be more effort form leadership to evaluate how they have tasks spread out.

There are 3 kinds of Alpha: the Opportunistic Alpha, Active Alpha, and Passive Alpha.

Everyone is an Alpha. Most are Passive.

You sure aren’t the first, OAs are already in a leadership position, milking their pack. OAs are leaders who have the job because PAs (passive alphas) let them have it.

You don’t seem to be the second either because an Active Alpha wouldn’t be asking this question. They’d either already be working for a leadership position, or already have it. AAs are the true leaders — they have the skills, and they don’t milk their packs — they EMPOWER their underlings to the peak until they no longer can — at which point they move on to the next.

You sound like a passive alpha, just like me. I just realized this the other day — but we’re all Alphas. We have it in us to lead — we just haven’t thought much about it or are too comfortable in our current roles to care about it.

Your pack Alpha can do what they want with you.

If you want to be an Active Alpha — you would have to leave the pack to find another without a OA or AA — and become the dominant OA or AA. If you don’t have the skillz, but have the mouth for it — you become an OA. If you have the skills, then the pack you assume control over is lucky — because you will empower them with the skills they need to succeed — and you empower yourself because you can move on to the next big pack.

Think about it.
