I hate it sometimes but then I think about it and I get to make $280k a year by sitting at home on the computer 5 days a week and being comfortable. Yeah the actual work can suck, like this stupid discovery dispute I’m dealing with. But then I think about my immigrant grandparents who worked in factories and fought in wars and never had much money and it puts it in perspective.
When I was practicing, I HATED discovery and discovery disputes. Being a judge is a much better lifestyle, but I do NOT make $280k
I hated being a lawyer. I hated being a Managing Attorney slightly less. At age 46, I decided to do something about my misery. I have always loved understanding data and how to quantify/predict successful outcomes. I started taking online night classes in data and analytics. I did that for about six or seven months and really honed my skills. I was eventually able to land in assistant vice president role of an insurance company, overseeing data analytics in the legal department. That led to exposure in the world of AI. Now I oversee AI integrations and data analytics. I have never been happier or more fulfilled in my life. I love my career. I love working. I love Mondays!. It’s never too late to make a change, but you will have to put in the work to make it happen.

I legit regret not going into medicine. I know that can be stressful and hard, especially in residency, which seems to last forever. But, every doctor I know who has their own private practice works like 3 days a week from 10 AM - 2 PM, makes a boatload, and contemplates retiring by 50. Plus, as a doctor, you will never have to worry about job security, ever. Even law firms are laying off associates in recent years and most in-house teams run extremely lean.
I know I'm probably oversimplifying it.
LS1 is onto something. My sister in law did just that. Works 3 days a week, basically runs a practice under a doctor that's hardly ever there and jet sets around the world all the time. She doesn't make as much as I do, but definitely more than a 5th year big law associate..And that's not bad at all for 3 days' work.
It’s all about perspective. Someone else in another field will think your career is glorious and they’d kill.
I get it, but you can also go into something else and realize holy shit i had it not too bad bc i got to sit on a desk and get paid massive amounts of money, you may realize it was all about perspective. That’s why it matters
My life as a partner at a boutique is pretty great. I work from home, make high six or low seven figures, have a pleasant firm culture, and don't work on weekends.
If I could find this unicorn, sign me up.
I feel you OP. Even the rainmaker partners are still beholden to the clients, who are the true wealthy ones
Honestly, entrepreneurship. You need to create your own company/sources of income because no other one employer pays like Biglaw. I’ve been trying for years to solve that problem, figure out what I can get other people to pay me to do. The Biglaw golden handcuffs can set you up for future disappointment if you want out but can’t learn to live on less $$ or develop multiple income streams.
Going through it I see.
Amlaw100 not that lucrative 😂😂😂
Doctors take way longer to make the money we do, though. Fresh out of law school making a quarter mili is wild. Whereas people are in residency for the better part of a decade before breaking 100k. Being a doctor is a long game whereas going straight into biglaw is a catapult to financial freedom.
No matter how much money you make, it’s not worth it if you’re not happy. Life’s short. Go for joy.
I did intake and discovery. I moved, and there are no legal jobs in what I'm trained in here. I make sandwiches and coffee now in a casino. Makes about as much as I did hourly, and the stress is nonexistent.
Hang in there - life is a grind no matter what job you have.
I am so sorry to hear that after you have worked so hard! May I suggest some books by or about attorneys who went through what you're going through like "Running From The Law". A non-lawyer who has been helpful to people trying to find a career they like is Barbara Sher.. It is also somewhat possible that some non-career counseling might be of some help. Best of Luck to you! I know a career or good use for your law degree is out there for you! I promise!
I love this! I’m such a data nerd, and I love systems and analytics. I’m not someone who is “all about the money” and don’t make big law money, but are you open to sharing where you are in salary range in comparison to AA2’s $280k? No pressure if not. I know it’s faux paux to even ask!
It can be pretty good as a partner.
You’re right - I do and have worked for nothing but lousy, toxic partners. Strokes of bad luck. I’d perhaps be happier if I encountered a good one
