Hi all, for the first time in my professional career, I have the opportunity to discuss compensation with my manager. I have been in the current company for about 9 months and I would like a reasonable increase - like. 5-10% salary increase. I am spearheading current automation opportunities within the team as well. The question is, how do I prepare for this meeting and what can be expected from these types of discussions? Any pointer to negotiate will help. Thanks.

9 months isn’t a lot of time but I’d present date behind your projects and if they’ve saved any company time or created efficiencies which produced cost savings in the project.

Without that data, 9 months in a roles isn’t something that will generate that substantial of a pay increase as “experience earned”.

Thank you for the advice. I think maybe that's me just being overambitious. I will be fine with a 1-5% increase. The automation has saved time within the team.

like

Please be ambitious. You have nothing to lose. There are people who get promoted in less than a year because they have done stellar work. I have gotten a 5% increase after a year. Please ask. Toot your horn. All the best.

Ask your manager what is needed to get that raise before your 1 year. Work on it and keep records of what you did, also emails if you get compliments on your job well done. Then bring it up on your annual review.

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

During my interview process I clearly stated my salary expectations of 95k-105k. They came back with an offer at 80k. Is it even possible for us to come closer to a better agreement with them being so low? All other aspects of the job are in line with what I'm looking for, so I really want to make this work.
