You should look for some local facebook groups to network in. I am in several in my area and they have been really helpful. They are a great place to meet people in your community.

Chicago has a strong HR community. I would join local SHRM groups to build early links
Clubs, professional networks (SHRM, etc.) or courses/school are great ways to meet people especially when relocating.
Beyond that, it can be hard to organically build those relationships or find people in a space where they're open to that, especially in a large city like Chicago.
TBH - school, certifications or general interest courses at a college or university are my best bet. You build relationships through group work, and if you network well with people who are city natives, they often have networks of other people they can introduce you to, which helps jump start building friendships
Thank you for responding. I think you raise some really great points and I appreciate the advice. In my experience in Denver, clubs and hobby groups have been a great way for people to meet that have moved here, one in particular being a dodgeball league that I’ve involved in. I’ll definitely build out a plan for exploring schools and general interest groups to get involved in.
