Hi all! I work for a local CPA firm and have realized that I’m the only one out of 50 people total and one other partner that are interested in SALT. I see myself creating a path for me to become almost invaluable here. I enjoy multi state returns and wanted to see if you’ll had any recommendations on how to increase expertise and become really tax technical with state and local tax issues? Tax senior here.

I second that!

Why are you saying you work at EY then?

Depending on where you want to ultimately end up, you could try teaching yourself about sales and use tax and maybe see if your firm
Would support you taking on a client already in the firm who needs that help. I know when I was at pwc we had a whole team of people just doing sales and use.
I think those of us who like salt have a different skill set then those who are strictly fed or international. We have the ability to to interpret and learn on the fly in some regards. States are notorious for being vague in their rules, requiring you to confirm with state agents the appropriate approach.
You could also learn About local state taxes like the LA business and use tax return or property tax. Utah requires a business to file a personal property tax. These are all things most people hate doing because it’s out of their comfort zone. I just said “I can try”, I did it and it moved me up quickly to VP.

Would it be difficult to get a job in IA if most of my experience has been auditing private non-404 asset mgmt funds? I really enjoy process walkthroughs when I have them though. Also, does title matter that much in IA? I’m a manager now, but based on job descriptions it looks like I might have to go for a senior auditor role because audit manager roles generally call for 8+ years from what I’m seeing. Can title be negotiated?

How possible is it to build a US-based career doing global public sector work while not being in New York or DC?

Currently a Manager at Accenture in Public Sector. Living in a progressive US city with a few direct flights to Europe, but definitely not New York or DC. PhD in public affairs. Actually I'm on the hiring roster for a P3 role at the UN.

Considering some life choices that would keep me living where I am though. Debating if this would kill hope of global work.

New Jersey partnership question.

Partnerships need to use market sourcing for purposes of calculating NR withholding tax (though NJ doesn't even call this withholding anymore).

However, for purposes of calculating the NJ distributive share of income, you apply Gross Income Tax (personal income tax) rules, which is 3 factor and includes COP.

If I end up with 0% apportionment under GIT and 10% apportionment under CBT (withholding tax), the partnership pays tax upfront but NRs get 100% refund?
