Keep in mind that the firm will replace you in an instant if you are not performing, so ultimately you do not owe them anything, as long as you are not violating your employment contract.
In the end, up to you how much you want to support your sponsors (maybe they were actually good people and deserve it?), but do not let them talk you into over committing. The firm usually takes whatever you allow to be taken, so be clear what your limits are. (And health should always come first, if this plays a role in your case.)
When I decided to leave, I had no search time (Europe) and worked as an EM basically until my last day on a crazy client development study with nearly no WIP and high expectations (001), doing the Ps a favor... did not even get a "Thank you" or farewell note on my last day.
Have a 1:1 with your sponsors as soon as possible and share your struggles. You need to first decide if you are 100% planning to go on search because they might ask if you’re able to stay through some portion of the study (eg through the first phase or steerco). If you’re not 100% then decide what are your must haves to be convinced to stay. Once you are clear on this have a direct discussion. Don’t worry people leave all the time and in the nicest possible way - you’re not that important or irreplaceable.
OP- just do this and ignore the remaining comments (including mine)
Are those people going to help you find your next role or do you absolutely need them for reference? Then better to preserve the relationship.
If you’re completely burnt out, I would have a conversation around that and highlight you might not be at the top of your game to deliver on this study. I think they might be more appreciative of your honesty. The worst thing that can happen is you underperforming on this study because of burn out and that being their last impression of you.
Just tell them you got CTL'd and have to go on search immediately. Lol
What is a “study”?
McKinsey way of calling a project, Bain calls a project a “case”, BCG calls a project a “project”
Email them saying good bye. Why do you care? You owe nothing
If it’s not just a transactional “work hard for me and I’ll reward you with more work” then it’s better to preserve they relationship
