How about Old East 6th area? The new Whole Foods opened up there. Lots of restaurants and bars are walkable. Good biking paths all around that part of East Austin and a quick ride to Downtown and the lake.
I worked in the Domain for many years. If you like living in a gentrified shopping mall that’s your place to be.
I live in a home in Windsor Park - the neighborhood adjacent to Mueller (which is quite nice, too)
I live on E 6th in that area and I love it. Lots of variety in walkable restaurants & bars. A little pricey depending on the building but the location is great
The Domain is literally the saddest most depressing area in Austin. Like living in a mediocre shopping mall. Live within 10 minutes of downtown (but avoid downtown) in any direction and you’re good.
Yup, it’s pretty absurd. But most people in this world sadly don’t have good taste. That’s why we have wall to wall carpet, True Religion jeans, and the Domain.

I can’t imagine wanting to live in the Domain. Y’all are crazy. Barton Springs/Hill / Bee Caves all day
Came here to second this. Do not live in the domain area!! Traffic is terrible and you could literally be in any other city and go to a massive mall.
Domain. It is super nice
Lol no it is not nice
Travis Heights, South Lamar, Tarrytown area. DM me, happy to share more:)

Clarksville is the top hood in austin imo. You’re centrally located to zilker and downtown. Also authentically walkable for Texas standards
Hyde park is great if you want to be in the north, very safe and walkable
Hyde park is a great reco and really central.
If you’re moving to Austin because you love Austin then anywhere south of downtown, Travis Heights, South 1st, S. Lamar still feels Old Austin but it is more expensive. But if you want walkable, and great things to do in your community then you can’t beat it.
Barton Hills, Zilker, Bouldin Creek, or East 6th!
Saint Elmo area, south Austin…. Business is booming here
Just don’t go outside and far on foot after 10pm. Lived here my entire life
I would suggest living away from the city and closer to neighborhoods with homes
When I first moved to Austin, I lived in South Austin off of Brodie near Davis. There are several apartment complexes in the area and plenty of stores/shopping nearby.
I moved here by myself with my dog, and never had problems where I was staying.
Nothing wrong with the domain, but it doesn’t feel like Austin. Or at least not classic austin
Really depends on how much you want to spend. It varies significantly across the city.

Mueller and the Domain are terrible. Cookie cutter apartments and homes that make you feel like you’re in some capitalist dystopia. Zero culture or personality and not a good representation of Austin at all.
Please do not listen to any of these people!
As some other folks said, any direction a stones throw around downtown is great.
I lived at Camden Brushy Creek in Cedar Park and I always felt safe with my doggo, but it is a longer drive to downtown Austin.
Your housing budget might hold some weight. Also, “good” and “safe” more-so just means low crime area, but without context of what “good” means to you, you’re not going to get targeted answers.
The domain or Mueller
Cedar park
No way 🤣
