I grew up in Austin and graduated from HS ~10 years ago, so this may be outdated. BUT, my impression is:
Eanes is probably the best
Lake Travis, Dripping Springs, Pflugerville decent
Westwood good in RRISD; Anderson and LASA good in AISD (secondarily SFA and Bowie)
I graduated from one of those places and ended up on an upper middle class b****fest app, so take that for whatever it’s worth
Lol I heard good things about Second Dripping Springs too
LASA if your kids can get in. I’m an alumni and had the fortune to have an easy ride through college due to the enriching curriculum. It’s a challenge and not everyone can get it, and it’s even harder to stay the course.
Eanes (West Lake Hills)
Thanks!
Chief
Eanes and Lake Travis for sure . However I would look at schools vs school districts as I have friends in those as well outside and there are pros and cons with all… no perfect place .
If I recall , my boss has mentioned the schools in Circle C were really good for his kids .
And yes, I have to check in on the new acronyms lol
Is the general perception that AISD is not super great vs. the other school districts? I would love to live in South Austin (close to the amenities, downtown), but the ratings/reviews skew towards the negative and the facilities look outdated
@Manager, seriously our little ones are barely toddlers but it's such a big deal for us
Also, check out the magnet schools in AISD.
no elementary magnets, but my kids went to a lower rated school and learned a lot and had great experiences...totally depends on which teachers you have. We lucked out and had awesome teachers who went above and beyond.

Really good elementary schools in circle c, kealing for magnet middle school and LASA for high school
Keep in mind with Austin and surrounding areas, a lot of population changes are causing a shift in demographics. As home prices continue to increase as well as rent, the socio economic profile of people who have the means to afford changes.
If your kids will not be in school for 5-7 years, don’t sweat it too much.
LASA in AISD is by far the best school in the area, and is nationally recognized. Was top 10 in the entire country when I attended. Admission is based on applications which consists of test scores, letters of recommendations, grades, essays and the like.
Anderson is close, but rest leaves a lot to be desired.
Schools in pville and Manor are horrendous. Round Rock has Westwood but rest is a crapshoot.
Leander has better schools of all the suburbs I’d say. Eanes district has much more money due to property tax revenue
Charter schools can also be a great option!
Eanes doesn't have more money bc of property tax revenue. Eanes benefits from wealthy parents who can help fill the gap, just like us Tarrytown families who give hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars directly to the school. Both districts, Eanes and AISD, lose significant sums to recapture.
There are plenty of decent schools in AISD. It just starts getting trick after elementary. My neighborhood feeds into Lamar and McCall, both of which I am happy with as they are also the arts magnets school for AISD. A lot of the schools mentioned here are either not actually in austin proper or in neighborhoods that will be prohibitively expensive for most. Tarrytown and Eanes ISD are very out of reach for my family and we make decent money.
