unrelated to your post but have been liking the idea of irish dance for my daughter. i never considered it would be so expensive - what are the expenses? the dresses?
So…(I can say a lot about this), most people don’t realize that Irish Dance is for more of a sport than an art so think of if more like ice skating than ballet. Once a dancer is ready to compete, (at competitions called Feis, pronounced “fesh”), there’s a lot of “stuff”. My daughter is 6, has been dancing for a little over 2 years and we’re already up to about $1000 a year in costs, not including classes. Here’s a rundown:
Practice uniforms (for weekly classes and school events like parades etc) - $40 for shorts, $40 for t shirt is the lowest but there are leggings, jackets etc that initially seem excessive but then you start to see why everything is needed eventually.
School costume - $260 for competitions at the beginner levels and school performances
Hard shoes ($100) and soft shoes ($50) - you need new ones every time their feet grow.
Poodle socks
Wigs (yes, seriously)
Feis fees
Then eventually solo costumes ($500-$2000) depending on the maker and style.
Dress bags, gear bags..
Oh and spirit wear…🤯
It’s crazy how fast you need this stuff if your kid is serious about it, which ours is - she’s obsessed with it. So despite the costs, we love that she could love something so much.
Makes a lot of sense. I took the survey. Good luck!
