This has never been an issue for female partners at my firm, and other partners and/or associates are assigned to cover the cases in the female partners absence. Why would anyone want to be a partner in a firm where they don’t trust any of their partners to be able to handle their cases in their absence?

I’m a partner who has covered another woman partner’s maternity leave and am now preparing for my own maternity leave. On many of my matters, I worked very closely with a senior associate who just made partner and I trust him to run those matters while I’m out. (He’s also my general backup if something unexpected pops up.) On other matters, I work with a talented mid-level associate who I trust to keep things going and have asked another partner to step in and supervise her while I’m out. For ongoing work I was handling independently, I’m looping in another partner to those relationships now so they can run point while I’m out.
It’s your firm’s job to help you figure this out so they can cover your work while you are on leave. Even if you’re not working closely with other people you trust now, the firm should help you identify a person or people you can lean on to pick things up while you’re out and you can start the transition before you leave.

Working hard to set up my support system in advance. And I agree with AA1 - I trust my law partners to handle my clients while I am out. I can’t imagine practicing with partners I didn’t trust.
