How do I stop being a perfectionist? I recently started at a new firm and am getting my feet under me. I had a client go around me to my boss because they did not like my opinion. My new boss did not like my tone of my opinion. I handled the situation professionally, course-corrected, and revised the opinion as requested by my new boss. But internally, I am not handling it very well. My thoughts are snowballing.

How is what your describing the effect of being a perfectionist? It sounds more like a lack of soft skills. I have met a fair number of attorneys who know the law well but aren’t good with people, and it’s tough because the higher up you go, the more this is a relationship game rather than a skills game.

He did not like the “tone” of your opinion? Kind of sounds like veiled sexism to me. I don’t think the issue is with you being a perfectionist. Some clients just aren’t going to like you, it happens.

Ok. At the risk of sounding stereotypical, and without knowing the specifics of your situation, I have found that some male partners/senior supervisors say they want subordinates who take control and handle things rather than ask questions or defer to them, but the same “tone” may be rewarded as assertive coming from a male subordinate vs off putting a female subordinate. The emotional labor I have had to put into managing “tone” and massaging information to be more palatable to (usually straight white older) men in the workplace is exhausting, but ultimately it makes getting things actually done easier, if that makes any sense.
