How do you balance advancing your own career and your direct reports' career growth? Do you typically focus on one more than the other? I feel like I neglect mine at the expense of my DRs but I don't think that's a wise decision.

A good company would recognize that the manager invested in the success of their direct reports is also the most deserving of their own career growth. Admittedly, not all companies recognize this as they should.

I’ve never found it to be a choice I needed to make - my role is that of player coach, so I have my own projects which take up a certain amount of my time, while my leadership commitments to the team take up the rest. And both parts of my job contribute to my success.
