It's definitely hard to balance, especially when you have struggling team members. I think that learning to reframe helping my team and helping my own career as two sides of the same coin helped me to not feel this inner tension so much. Like, managing your team well DOES further your own career goals. And giving yourself and your team members time for development opportunities is a solid use of everyone's time as well
What helps is reminding myself that it is easier for my company to consider letting me move up or on to a new position if they know my team is ready to pick up where I leave off. So helping them to learn and grow and take on more positions my team to carry on when I move on, keeps everyone satisfied, and gives us ALL opportunities to grow. And really, if I hadn’t had leaders willing to do the same for me earlier in my career I wouldn’t be where I am now. It’s only fair to do the same for my team.
