I typically use the day back from a break as a light review day. I go through the concepts we were working on before break and then we play a review game.
We start back with a review of rules and expectations. This helps to get them back into the routine.
I gave them a Vibe check assignment that gives them an opportunity to be reflective of the past year
We jump right back into the swing of things. Start the new year out right!
I think it depends on the level one is teaching. Younger, elementary students need a gradually intro to the new year, with a couple of fun activities. The entire day cannot be that. There is also a large possibility of new students arriving, so then there would be those activities used to include them and introduce them to the new school/class. Older students could have a few minutes of ‘welcome back’ and then down to business. They should have the ability to get to work
We begin a new reading workshop!
We begin writing with purpose following grammar and punctuation to convey ideas. The first semester we work on reading, vocabulary, and how to think about answers in writing. Now we will help each other make our writing make sense.
Jump right into the new topic
Review expectations, school norms, remind students of upcoming trips, PBIS rewards, and then pick up where I left off before the Xmas break.
