Yes they can definitely help you get referrals to other companies. If you leave on good terms and are a good performer you will always have that network to fall back on. I have also seen partner and senior managers help find a place for PwC employees that are ready for a career change. My local market team keeps a listing of open positions at clients.
EY calls them boomerangs and they are generally accepted back if 1) they left on good terms and 2) they didn’t go to work directly in competition eight their old practice and now want to go back to it. I have heard of a couple of people who have left to go into industry and then came back to a different position.
