PIP is a formal process handled by HR. Typically used to create a paper trail in case it leads to
Dismissal and therefore acts as evidence to
Protect the company from wrongful dismissal claims. It has or should have clear actions and time frame. CDP is roughly the same but is sort of a step down from a formal PIP typically HR devolve it to people leads to just manage. PIP more than often leads to an exit CDP doesn’t in my experience. But it is a possibility. Personally I think they are not all used consistently
From a policy perspective, CDP is just a PIP that has offloaded the admin to the people lead. An IP still counts as a formal written warning regardless and yes, CDP can lead directly to dismissal, without needing to go to a PIP first. Completing your CDP actions doesn’t guarantee you’ll come off IP either… basically if you’re on an IP, regardless of the state of your CDP, you are indeed at risk of getting the HR call if the business decides it needs to make cuts. This is especially true if you get lumped with an IP for two PA cycles in a row (eg full and mid year), which is a big risk in forced distribution if you have a strong peer group or high TAL.
But to end on a positive, I think there are also plenty of IP/CDP cases that turn out just fine with no further action - just get a promo recommendation!
