Coach
If there’s a work ethic and a good attitude, you give a long leash and coach them. If it becomes a matter of teaching them how to be an adult - like, how to show up to meetings and be polite, that’s mom and dad’s job.
In summary, the boundary for me is, I’m happy to teach craft, but it’s not my job to teach someone the basics of being employable.
Especially if they are from a background different to your own. Privilege works in many ways. Consider the person from low income backgrounds, or whose first language isn’t English. I think the long leash also *does * need to apply to employability a little bit.
Damn cold world
Damn dude, I don’t even think about letting them go. It’s a learning curve, everyone takes their own time to get used to creative/agency bullshit.
If they truly haven’t gotten the hang of things after 8 months to a year, then it’s time to have a discussion, not to fire ‘em.
Valid point. I guess I’ve only managed juniors who have grown into the role well, and I’m a bit of a forgiving boss. Time to toughen up and have those come-to-Jesus convos earlier 💪
Whatever the issues are, you have a responsibility to give them good feedback and help them get better.
A week. 5 business days, to be exact.
My last agency hired an intern then gave her about 18 months before they finally didn’t feel like she’d grown into the job. She worked hard, just wasn’t able to pull the weight needed at a small shop
