It’s nothing like NYC
Agreed! I only used it once in LA and was horrified! But wondering if professionals actually use it as I am tired of living in DTLA and I don’t drive - European, I know :)
Depends on the neighborhood you’re in and which system you’re using.
There are commuter buses from the west side are reliable, on time, good seating. Lots of professionals use it. Unfortunately, I don’t know the specific bus line (co-workers at a previous job took it but I didn’t)
The metro (rail) is actually quite decent, but still only gets you to a few places
The metro (bus) is not particularly reliable. I wouldn’t use it for commuting
Metrolink (train) is good, but again only gets you to a few places (suburbs)
The Commuter Express—its clean and reliable, but the hours are limited. Metro rail is fine, though there were some smelly incidents when unhoused people came on.

Pre COVID, I used to take the Gold Line Metro from Pasadena to DTLA with a Red Line transfer at Union Station.
Super easy , convenient and safe - Red line was slightly sketchy but never saw anything untoward. Gold Line seemed perfectly safe and the trains are new and clean.
Beats the hell out of driving hands down.
