OP- I say take them up on the offer and come out here. Will be a good change from NYC.
See if they can provide you with housing in Koreatown or Mid Wilshire/Miracle. Far fewer homeless than in DTLA, convenient commute to DTLA and tons of things to do in the immediate vicinity. Very centrally located to most places in LA.
Covid has improved significantly, and continues to improve. Just be diligent about wearing masks and other safety protocols.
Just be prepared to deal with traffic. Yes it’s really bad, but it can be managed if you plan around it.
For commuting to work, you can easily take the Metro or Metrobus - the public transit system is good enough to get from point A to B and back for work.
Disagree with M1, public transit can be really easy way to get to downtown. When I had clients there, I took one of the Commuter Express lines—clean, safe, easy and less stressful than driving. I chilled out and listened to podcasts. Note, this was all pre-COVID and with the heavy traffic downtown due to all kinds of building and road construction, it was just easier.
That said, traffic is much lighter these days since many offices are closed.
I would worry about safety downtown rn as far as living. And Venice Beach has had safety issues as of late too due to homelessness as well.
Overall, just know CA is under the tightest restrictions right now: no indoor dining, no indoor gyms, no indoor events. Plenty to do outdoors, but unsure of what your interests are.
Go to LA!! Also live in NY and stayed in LA for 4 months, so worth it
If you’re not used to homelessness, DTLA will be a shock to you.
On the bright side, weather.
Make sure you get a car and parking spot as part of the deal.
Manhattan Beach, or bust.
“The Big One” Earthquake
I’ll bring my seismometer
The benefits of living downtown are greatly diminished right now with limited outdoor seating for restaurants and bars and a lot of permanent closures. Be thoughtful about where you decide to stay. I.e. beaches or mountains might be better than downtown for activities

Echo Park isn’t just echo park lake. I love the area around cookbook / Elysian park. Highly recommend if you can get a little bungalow. Also check out highland park.

Here’s an overview:
If you’re going to be working a ton and value convenience dtla is fine. It is not ideal during covid since there is less outdoor space. Yes you will have to deal with homeless people being around but honestly they are everywhere at this point.
If you don’t care about convenience and want a true California beach experience go to Venice or Santa Monica. It’s more expensive and longer commute but hey you may only get the experience once.
If you want something in between, stay in silver lake, echo park, los feliz or highland park. Theyre close to downtown. The neighborhoods are walkable and close to outdoor areas, and more enjoyable to live in during covid than dtla.

All areas I listed are walkable for restaurants/activities. Commutes to dtla:
Santa Monica/ Venice: 20-30 min non rush hour; 40-60 min rush hour (pre-covid was >1hr but is much less now); expo line is ~60-70 min
Silverlake/echo park: 15-20min
You’re all amazing btw thank you
Ohhhh sooo many questions?
First, are they covering housing costs for this temporary relocation?
Second, I’m unclear as to what you mean when you say “worth coming”? Beaches, hiking trails are open... is that worth the relocation? Probably not. Restaurants finally opened for outdoor dining? Is relocating to LA to eat food worth coming? Ehhh, probably not. Let me flip the question on you, what would be worth temporarily coming to LA?
Third, I grew up and was raised in LA, and I’m still in LA. The homelessness problem here is absolutely NUTS!! Homeless encampments have encroached nearly every area of the city. Depending on where you live and your gender, some areas are just not safe to walk at night.
Fourth, do you plan on getting a car?
in terms of COVID precautions, rarely do I see anyone not wearing a mask. You are truly looked upon as a leper if you’re not wearing a mask. Similarly, while outdoor dining is open, tables are limited to 6 people.
In terms of how bad it is, numbers of confirmed positives are taking a deep dive and hospitalization rates are down.
I live in Glendale (a little north of downtown LA) and even with covid it’s not a bad place to be. Weather is nice and you can still do some site seeing but just note that a lot of the cool stuff is still closed.
Still in close proximity to head to cool outdoor spots though! I would do it.
Men don't ask for directions? 🤷🏻♂️
The NW portion of Ktown is great for running as it's area from Western to Larchmont is a super residential, suburban neighborhood with lots of trees and quiet streets. Plus great restaurants and groceries in walking distance.
If it’s going to be a great move for your career then it could be worth it, but as far as experiencing the great things about LA, sadly you will most likely miss out on them due to Covid. The restaurants, bars, events, concerts, theaters, parties, etc. just won’t be the same for a while. Yes, there are many incredible outdoor things to do, but you are probably going to generally get shorted on the LA experience at this time.
If you do go though with it, definitely would look at Hollywood, WeHo, Santa Monica, Venice for the best LA experience.
Mariscos Jalisco... taco truck about 10 min east of downtown. Bomb ass shrimp tacos.
