2-3 per year (5-7 day spans). I book a couple months ahead and ensure to plan life/work projects and timelines to accommodate.
My PTO is part of my compensation package and I make it a priority to use it.
I’ve found that planning vacations well in advance helps me realize I need to set boundaries with work and consequently lets my workplace know that they have clear boundaries to work around when it comes to me. I had to make the hard and honestly brave decision, to make myself appear as that person in the office who's stubborn about WLB (mainly clocking out at 5 PM) and somehow it did me more good than I'd ever expected.
I take two to three 5-14 day vacations per year along with a sprinkling of half days and days off. As ITEAM 1 does, for the longer ones I plan them months in advance (the one I take every January is booked for the next year in January), the one we’re taking as a whole family in July was booked in July last year.
Once booked, they immediately go in my calendar at work and are non negotiable.
I work in federal contracting, so cannot take my work out of country. Which means that I aim to go on trips with at least one stop out of country so that I can legitimately assert that I cannot take my work devices with me. And then I just don’t take them.
I’ve been with my company for ten years and accrue five weeks of PTO plus two weeks of floating holiday every year. So I have to get creative to use all the time off. And as ITEAM 1 said, PTO is part of the compensation package, and I’m not willing to just hand it back to my company by not using it.
The first week back from my vacations always kind of stinks because I have to get caught back up on everything, but the time away is lovely.
It’s important to me and I don’t want to underpay myself by not taking PTO so I schedule vacations when I want and take them! Usually at least 2-3 weeklong trips and then long weekends when I can!

4th of July and Christmas breaks, we (my partner and I) make it an annual commitment to do something. Doesn’t need to be a lavish thing, could even be a staycation but you owe it to yourself mentally to take some time off. Scheduling annual blocks is helpful for planning and consistency imo.
