I’ll give you a generic consulting answer, which is “it depends.” Compensation and benefits are much lower, but the work-life balance is excellent, so my effective hourly pay is about the same. I get to be home with my family a lot more, I don’t have to travel, and I can actually be present to watch my kids grow up.
If you subscribe to the philosophy of Thoreau’s Walden - that it’s not just earning money per hour, but buying back the time to truly live - then I’ve hit the jackpot! But if you want to measure my life in terms of dollars earned per year, then I’ve lost out quite a bit. :)
Definitely greener for me — mainly because the work I do now and the skills I’m building feel a lot more real and aligned with what the world actually needs. Long story short, I’m in tech/AI now, and McK just wasn’t the best place to go deep in that space. I’m learning technical, high-ROI skills that are paying off both short and long term.
Comp-wise, I’m not making EM-level jumps, but my growth is already outpacing what I’d expect as a 2+0 BA staying to 3rd year. More importantly, I feel like the skills and experience I’m gaining are opening more doors — especially in AI/tech roles and even things like entrepreneurship — that offer better upside in both dollars and freedom down the line.
