I have direct reports that make more than me. It’s a slap in the face for sure and very common but I don’t want to go job hunting right now.
I recently found out that I make more than my coworker, and she has been at the company longer than I have. It’s not by much, but it makes me feel bad, you know? I know she does so much for the company it deserves more than she’s given
There’s so many variables and sometimes it sort of makes sense but last year I found out I was paid the same as my colleague who has double the experience I do (but we do the same job). I didn’t think that was fair although she got a promotion since so she now makes a lot more than me!

When it happened to me, it was a massive difference because I was wearing 15 hats because my area was in startup mode and I worked my way up vs someone who was hired in at the real pay level.
It’s a slap in the face for sure. And unfortunately, HR has no qualms about it because they were getting the biggest bang for their buck.
I lucked out with getting the titles (while the pay didn’t match). So it helped making a lateral move.

I would use that information to motivate me to advocate for higher pay, but I wouldn’t throw it in my managers face like “I know [coworker] makes X, you should pay me that too”.
