Women are frequently criticized for their “tone”. Which is code for “we want you to be all sweet, smiley, and humble. “
I have a light southern accent and get mostly positive feedback… but I’m pretty sure the reasons for that aren’t good.
If there were as many women in power as men, the social expectations for what success looks like and how gendered it can be would change. We should certainly try to curb our implicit biases but realistically the answer is to just put more women in positions of power, vs trying to solve why it’s hard for them to get there in a man’s world. There are a lot of critiques on DEI initiatives coming into conflict with meritocratic systems but I think it’s worth a brief era of “unfairness” to groups in power to force a rebalance and new normal that’s more just for society in the long run…
Texas accent - and it’s usually fine, but if I’m on the east coast, I’ll work extra hard to mask it.

It's interesting you mention that. I've always tried to be mindful of my accent in professional settings, but I also believe that authenticity is important. As long as we communicate effectively, our style shouldn't hold us back.
