I have held different rolls in multiple different fields of work. Some that require higher education and other only a high school diploma, GED, or nothing at all. It all depends on what you want to do. I am not doctor so I can not tell you how to handle or deal with your anxiety, and I don't know your severity as well as I am not a psychological expert. All i can say is find something you have passion for or something that interest you. Unfortunately, it is can be all to easy to end up with a job that you dislike, but we stick it out for the paycheck. At my age I don't live to work, I work to live. My employment allows me the ability to make money so that I can afford to go on vacation, go out to dinner, do the thing that I enjoy doing. You are 18, you will find something. Start small, work in fast food, retail, groceries store. Don't jump ship to ship to quickly, when you move jobs, you want to move either lateral, or up. NEVER DOWN. That has the only advice i can give for someone who has held a job 3 decades.
You can always go to temp to hire agencies and apply with them. They usually hire people with little to no experience. That way it gets you a foot in the door to employment. Just don't allow yourself to get stuck in that job unless it's something that you really like. A lot of people may disagree but in my opinion, factory work is not a good way to earn money for the rest of your life. As we grow older, physical work gets harder and harder, although I know you are a long way off from that. Just bear that in mind. The best advice I can give you is to consider things that you are interested in and further your education in that field. Be careful with your choice because there are a lot of fields that are very saturated.
I am a decrepit, weak, uneducated, low-skilled 51 yr old lady, with some pretty bad physical and mental diagnoses, who has slipped through the cracks and still doesn’t qualify for Disability. I am HUNGRY, and on the verge of being homeless, and have been spending a minimum of 12 hours a day 24/7/365 working on all the lengthy processes of landing a remote job- bc it is all I can physically do now. Since January 2024. ALL the jobs that I have been applying for, that I barely have the requirements for, are going to the 18 YR OLDS, and no one over 25 is getting them! Go online and make profiles for all the job boards, and apply for all the WFH Work From Home, or Remote jobs. YOU will get more job offers than you can imagine. Go join ALL the WFH job groups on Facebook and other social media. You’ll see more job leads and the posts from the people who are getting all the job offers’ official offer letters. Anyone can go see for themselves that what I am saying is true. 18 yr olds with very big obstacles, and huge reasons to have the anxiety they do- like living alone in the projects, raising their own kid all by themselves, no vehicle, no family, no baby daddy are working around the clock, they can’t be bothered or stressed out about the gunshots and crime all around them and their baby. They are too busy to whine or make excuses.
MY own 18 yr old son grew up in that type of environment. All he has had is me in his life, to completely support and raise him. He’s had it really bad! He’s going to be a Senior in High School, he’s had some serious health problems, and should be a total mental wreck. Instead, he’s a highly productive, driven, self-sufficient, innovative, hard working, independent, 3 sport athlete, church volunteer, contributor to the weaker, elderly community, a blessing to everyone around him, my caregiver, and the man of the house here, and for my elderly poor parents. He has NEVER complained about his having to work to buy his own necessities, or making ends meet, or utilities being cut off until he made enough money as an 11 yr old kid to have them turned back on. He has bought literal trash and turned it into things he sold in person, or online, all behind my back. He has stolen nothing, was given very little, owes nothing, and is extremely modest, humble and grateful to have survived all that he has lived through. He has heart, empathy, so many varied interests and topics of devoted self-study, integrity and a strong moral compass, and self-esteem/confidence. He is both highly respected and respectful. He doesn’t make problems for anyone. He solves them. He learned really young that he must take responsibility for learning all he can, and that his making excuses or complaining would be wastes of his time, and not get him anything good, mercy, pity, or help with anything. I take ZERO credit for the man he is now. I am doing all I physically can do to become less of a burden to him. You are BOTH the same age! What else do you have in common? What are YOU going to do? What’s the next step you are going to take now that YOU are an adult? Invest in yourself, your education, your skillset, and ONLY yours. Don’t let anyone or anything distract or tempt you to lose your focus, while you have the ability to build your own future and fortune. Don’t look for love or someone else to help you. Don’t become a problem for anyone else, or create problems for yourself. Keep strong values and know your value. Be grateful to God, be the best version of a human being who deserves blessings. Be honorable and honor those who have laid foundations for you. I wish you success, happiness, prosperity and satisfaction. I’ve had all the above in nice proportions, and I am wanting to feel it all again, and as always- will have to figure out how to make it all happen by myself, for myself. I want to be someone that my son is proud of. You WILL be someone who will make people proud of you! Believe it, and believe in yourself!
I am in the exact same predicament 😞
Have you tried Walmart?
I can't offer much help on what jobs to look for it depends to much on your skills that I don't know.
But my biggest advice, from personal experience, is make sure you get Healthcare with your job, and then seek out a therapist. Talking about your anxiety really helps. Having another rational person challenge you to think about why something is making you anxious, and start to learn to do it yourself really helps.
Unfortunately, I don’t struggle with anxiety and I’m not a professional or a doctor, but I would start off with talking to a psychologist. If you are one of those who thinks therapy is for crazy people than I don’t know what to tell you in that case. As far as for work, if I were you, I would apply at The Home Depot. A lot of veterans, retirees, and college students work there as a “staying active” and “while I’m in college” type of job. Low stress and laid back is what I see every time I walk in. They offer stock options, are competitive in pay, and are pretty flexible with schedules. Night positions (no one around) or day positions (part time to start off, while you work on your anxiety with a professional).
I have level 1 autism and was very anxious about working when I was younger. Working in a store like Walmart and Target unloading trucks and putting merchandise on the shelves was an amazing job for me. Depending on what shift you take, there is a little interaction with customers but not much. I liked the repetitive work, having a system and not a lot of social interaction.
I can agree with what you have said. I knew someone really well that was in the same shoes, and he did very well with being an overnight stocker at a 24 hour retail store. Absolutely a great suggestion!
There are many directions you could go- if you prefer a more quiet environment, maybe a bookstore or library? If you find yourself calmed by animals, maybe try a doggie daycare type place or a veterinary hospital? If you like the outdoors you could try a plant nursery or pottery shop… if you like music, a smaller record shop? I worked for a florist/flower shop when I was younger… that was a great job. Everything smelled so nice, and no one is ever really unhappy to receive flowers.
There's a lot of good workout there and also if you're wanting to find work there's a couple apps I can suggest to you, indeed snagajob classdoor and ZipRecruiter you want to do what you're good at but also you know if you want to possibly don't want to work for like fast food there's also a couple of good restaurants you can probably start out you know you can start out as a server of what's your way you made me a dishwasher and then a cook and if you don't like that you know other suggestions I would be able to tell you is possibly like a janitor night service we can clean up offices or the best type of work they can get as a custodian at a school district they have good benefits the hours are of course evenings but during the summer of the during the day and you can make enough money to go on vacations or go out to eat but just find something that you enjoy doing even carpentry is a good job and a good trade or electrician or even a painter those are all good trades and there are trade schools out there that you can take and to help you learn to do the job but like I said just find something that you enjoy doing that is if you don't want to go to college there are plenty of work out there that does not require a higher education learning a trade is probably your best way to go
A job as a custodian/Janitor may help you. You typically have set tasks that need to be done but your largely left on your own without any kind of pressure.
Friendly tip grow up!!!!
18 ,what i would do to be 18 again ,door to door ,figure out what you like,18 def. Should be helping out family ,working g will help that
Landscaping is very therapeutic. I ran a crew for 10 yrs best therapy ever because you are taking care of plants and grass and helping them grow and trimming them to look beautiful just as our parents should have done for us. If they didn’t do that for you there is your chance to see how difficult it is and learn the skills necessary to help others and yourself grow.
I’ve had severe anxiety for for about 6 years or so I’m 24 now, I know it’s easy to say this or that it’s really all hard I still struggle with my work and managing my anxiety but one thing I will say is I’ve been installing gutter for the last 3 years and being outside getting sun and feeling like I’ve accomplished something everyday tends to help drown out a lot of my stress and worry. Maybe you can look into some sort of outdoor work if you give it a try worst that can happen is you’ll find something else but that has worked for me for recent years. I hope you get to where you want to be and feel welcomed!
Well first of all your family should be helping you with your anxiety and assisting you with your job search. Go talk to them. Family helps family.

I don’t know where you are located but I know my place of work is hiring and this is a very low anxiety situation (unless you are scared or don’t like dogs) i would recommend working somewhere where you are not really having to talk to so many customers and clients but sometimes that allows you to be in the back not having to talk with people and that should help with the anxiety
