I've seen where older candidates leave dates off their resume entirely and let the experience speak for itself. I can understand why they do that to avoid some of the age discrimination
I took an almost 7-year gap to focus on raising our kids. For my resume, I arranged it to focus on skills rather than dates of employment, and I backed up the asserted skills with examples from previous employment and day to day full time parenting. I also included a cover letter that talked briefly about my mentality toward learning and working, why I was choosing to re-enter the workforce, and the work ethic I would bring to the team.
